What is De Woordenwaag?

De Woordenwaag is a company that specialises in writing, checking/editing and translating texts. It is situated in Krimpen aan den IJssel, a city near Rotterdam, in The Netherlands.

Our logo emphasises we weigh our Dutch ánd English words before we use them in our texts.

Who’s behind De Woordenwaag?

The person behind De Woordenwaag is Mariëlle Nederlof. Ever since kindergarten I have been enthusiastic about language: I was, for instance, too impatient to wait for reaching the standard age of learning to read. At secondary school, I was one of the schoolpaper editors, I wrote poems and I thought it a challenge to master all grammar and spelling rules in the Dutch language. I simply loved writing sharp texts that stirred their readers.

After secondary school, I studied English Language and Culture at Leiden University. I specialised in syntax and graduated on the way children acquire the passive tense in first language acquisition. After also getting my master’s degree in education, I started teaching English at a secondary school. One of my tasks is teaching my students how to write effective letters and essays.

My own creativity was not much in use anymore, though, and I really missed creating texts myself. Hence, I took the step to start De Woordenwaag in July 2016.

How does De Woordenwaag operate?

De Woordenwaag cooperates with advertising, online marketing and translation agencies. After consultation with them we write texts that suit the customers’ identities and their intended audiences. Analysing the subject matter is a vital part of the preparation stage.

Besides, De Woordenwaag has their own customer base whom we work for without involvement of advertising agencies or the like. After discussion of the customer’s wishes and, if useful, a tour at the work place to get a feel of the company identity, we start working to turn ideas into texts.
